I ask this because in the last 5 months or so I have heard several references to the sun/moon moving clockwise across the sky.
I live in Australia and prior to that New Zealand and I see them moving anti-clockwise across the sky.
Which way do others perceive the sun/moon moving? and
Do you use north as your reference point to reach your conclusion?
Currently I live in central west New South Wales. However, I had the same perception when I lived in North Queensland above the Tropic of Capricorn.
Currently, we at the height of summer with the sun being at it's southern extreme.
Whether I face north or south, I still perceive an anti clockwise movement.
Since my house faces north, I will talk from a north facing point of view.
So, the house faces north (as all good Aussie houses ideally should), therefore the front and rear of the house run east (92 deg) to west (278 deg). There is guttering and eaves of approx 85cm.
There is a road that runs parallel to the front of the house approx 100mtrs away.
There are no hills close, the one the sun comes up behind is at least at least 4km away as the crow flies.
So the sun rises directly behind this hill to the east (115 deg) and is behind the house . As the sun rises it moves north. It will traverse along the front of the house and the sun will directly shine on the wall up to approx 60cm. When I walk on the road in the morning, the house (south side) is on my right and the sun is on my left.
The sun sets to the left of the house (obviously) at about my 7 o'clock which is south west (227 deg).
If I use the eastern hill as my reference point then the sun moves around my left side and sets just shy of coming onto my right shoulder.
Like most people, I assumed what I was seeing is what everyone else saw and I was very surprised to hear others say the sun moved in a clockwise direction, hence my question.
What part of Australia are you in, and what direction are you looking when you observe the suns movement?
